Money Mania
Wow....why in the world is teaching money to Kindergarteners so hard? You would think that would be something they would want to learn about....but they eather know it or they call all coins a quarter...lol...gottalove it!
Well...here is my 2 cents on the subject......
I found this wonderful song that has helped my kids learn the value of each coin (and it shows a picture of the coin so they can also use it as a visual clue). I often give them a cup with one of each coin in it so they can hold it up during the song.
Hey Honey Bunny
I have also found that using 5 and 10 frames work good...especially when you start trading pennies for nickel's and dimes.
The kids love to have a divided chip/dip container in the middle of the table and each child having a dice. They roll the dice and get that many pennies and put it in a cup in front of them. If they roll a 5 they automatically get a nickel. After a set amount of rolls...they trade pennies in for nickels. If they are pretty sound in their knowledge of this I will let them trade in for dimes also. They LOVE it!!!
I have small containers (dollar store) that I like to put REAL money in and I usually begin each money lesson with these containers. I give it to the kids to "play" with before we start our math lesson. At first they just sort and line up the coins but by the end of the unit they are trading coins on their own.
I also found these SIMPLE books that have been good because it isn't a lot of words or pictures so it isn't so overwhelming for them.
I usually spend at least 2 days on each coin. Most of the second day is trading coins. I have also found that using the SmartBoard (with a lesson made from a piggy bank and then infinite clone a penny, nickel and dime).
